AIA: Form + Foundation is a recruitment book designed to engage high school students and their parents by introducing them to the world of architecture. The project came with several stipulations: an unlimited budget, a three-color print restriction, four quotes from architects, and a requirement to use the provided text.
Within those parameters, the design focuses on balancing approachability for students with credibility for parents. The three-color palette was used strategically to create visual hierarchy and energy, ensuring readability while maintaining a sense of refinement. Pull quotes from architects were highlighted to provide authentic, inspirational voices and anchoring the book’s content in real-world experience. The paper, a warm but light yellow with speckles of blue, enhance the content’s visual feel to be warm and embracing: the idea of a home. Typography and layout (the layout which, when fully open, is the size of the smallest blueprint available) choices emphasized clarity, accessibility, and design (specifically in architecture) as both form and foundation.
