A Brief History of Tattoos is a chapter book that explores the origins and cultural significance of tattoos. I’ve always found tattoos and their history fascinating, so I took the time to research and learn about their traditions and meanings across different cultures.
Design choices for the book reflect that same depth of history. The paper was chosen to resemble human skin after being tattooed: textured, roughed, and even scarred. The fonts were carefully selected to reflect culture, tattoo imagery, and Biblical influences. Subtle tattoo elements bleed through the edges of the pages and cover while design motifs hint at the church’s historical influence on tattooing. Every element was intentionally chosen to connect the reader not just to the content, but also to the layered cultural and spiritual narratives surrounding tattoos.
